We received a stethoscope, otoscope, reflex hammer, sphygmomanometer (adult and pediatric cuffs), eye chart, tuning forks, pen light, tape measure, and EKG caliper. It was seriously like christmas day for PA students. After that we had our lab on vital signs and patient history.
This coming Tuesday I have my first simulated patient. This is when an actor comes in and portrays a patient and we have to take our history on them. This is by far something I am really nervous about because you are not only interviewing them, you ar edoing so in front of 3 classmates and a faculty advisor. I am nervous but excited to get going with this and gain more confidence. Ok, well just finishing up some ENT studying for a clin med quiz tomorrow and to finish watching the Grammys! Have a great week everyone! Any questions, just ask! :)

I just wanted to say your blog is great! I will be starting PA school in August and can not wait to start! Keep up the writing it helps a lot of people. I have started my own blog as well.
ReplyDeleteFor your supplies, were there things that you needed to get on your own, or are all the things you need what they give you?
Thanks for reading and for the encouragement Chase! I will hopefully have enough time to update this weekend or next week, been so busy with midterms. A blog is so fun to write and to hear the responses. Plus, it reminds you of what happened during the blur of PA school :) SO keep it up :)
DeleteFor my supplies, the cost was budgeted into our tution for the first semester and it includes everything that we need for our labs and out on rotations. I found this very helpful because in the end, with it tacked into your tution, it doesn't feel like you are paying out of pocket for the equipment and in the long run saves you money.
Congrats on your acceptance and I look forward to reading your blog as well!! Feel free to ask questions anytime :)

ReplyDeleteDid you have any say in what type of equipment you received? For example were you able to choose a specific type of stethoscope? My school had a “buy your stuff” day where we got a chance to meet with reps from various companies that sold books, bp cuffs, stethoscopes, and other goodies. Man, it was exciting to be blowing through my school loan money on that stuff. Now that I am paying the loans off, I wish realize I should have gone for the discount rack. Most of the equipment you will use until you get out of school, then it sits in your closet collecting dust. I do still use the same stethoscope that I got when I entered the PA program. Only had to replace the tubing once so far. Good luck to you in the clinical year; it is when things really get interesting.
ReplyDeleteCheck out my blog at www.thepasoapbox.com, or send me an e-mail if you have any questions about being a pa to qfwm2001@thepasoapbox.com. Also, maybe in the future we can guest write for each other. Good luck again, qfwm2001.
PS. do not use blogger for anything. just signed up to get this to you.
